Korean Men in Grip of Plastic Surgery Craze

At university, Han was considered a bit of a heartthrob for his good looks, but early this month he nonetheless spent W4 million (US$4,000) on a softer chin. He is one of an increasing number of Korean men who are succumbing to the plastic surgery craze that has gripped the country.

The clinic asked him if he wanted the looks of celebrities like Jang Dong-kun or Lee Joon-ki, the star of the blockbuster “The King and the Clown,” but Han insisted on a chin of his own design. Now embarked on the beautification project, he is considering more sculptural improvements once he has recovered from the operation.

A growing number of male customers are knocking on the doors of clinics, mostly to make their angular faces smoother and narrower.


At Dong Yang Plastic Surgery in Seoul's affluent Gangnam district, men now make up 40 percent of customers up from less than 10 percent in 2004. The release of the "The King and the Clown” with its celebration of androgynous beauty led to a steady trickle of at least one or two inquiries every day. The clinic's chief says the surge coincided with the rising fame of handsome actors such as Gang Dong-won, Won Bin and Jang Dong-kun.

The trend is visible everywhere. At another clinic, men used to account for barely 5 percent of chin surgeries, but the figure began to grow by an annual 10 percent from three or four years ago to 20 percent now. Men’s cosmetic surgery is moving from adjusting a feature here and there toward creating a whole new look for face and body. Real for Men, a clinic specializing in plastic surgery for the boys, says nose and eye surgery still takes up the lion’s share with some 82 percent, but more men are asking about chins and liposuction.

The cost is about the same as for women. It costs W4.5 million for a new chin, W2.5-3 million for a nosejob, W1.2-1.5 million for double eyelids, W5 million to reduce cheekbones, W5-7 million for belly and hip liposuction, W5 million for the implant of 2,500 hair follicles and W100,000-120,000 for skin treatment. Alarmingly, more than half of the patients are college students. Jobs that involve contact with clients such as doctors and designers take up 10 percent, office workers 9 percent, conscripts about to be discharged 8 percent and jobseekers 7 percent. Only 5 percent are trying to break into the entertainment business.

Real for Men chief Lee Sang-eun says the plastic surgery boom among men can be attributed to the emphasis on appearance in society, predicting that a craze for more androgynous looks will continue for the time being.

Yo lo lei en algun foro de asia...

Actually, some members of shinhwa did undergo plastic surgery. Shin HyeSung did his eyes, and DongWan did the tip of his nose :shame:

Los musculos pueden ser falsos jajaja, los implantes si que ayudan tambien a los hombres....
tambien lei que Bi-Rain se hizo una cirugia a la nariz, segun lei porque tenia unos problemas, al igual que algunos miembros de shinwa y otros de tvqx/dbsk y muchos otros actores o cantantes que se han operado la nariz.. no creo tantos tengan el mismo problema pero digan lo que digan es que desean mejorar su imagen y quien no? ...

pero lo ultimo que lei fue que los koreanos ahora hacen que su hijos se operen desde muy jovenes para mejorar su aspecto.. sera verdad?, dice que ellos creen en la perfeccion..

si es vedad yo no veo la diferencia en lo fisico de Bae, tan solo que pinta muy bien

Es un pequeño detalle lo del parpado, pero si los hace ver más lindo eso esta claro, porque si no fuera asi no se operaran

no me sorprende tanto como cuando vi las operaciones de las koreanas, l
o de Bae Yong osea no se k se ha operado y bueno y si e sk lo hizo cuando muestran el antes y el depsues en las dos se ve hermoso,

Kwon snag woo si se opero los ojos tambien me gusta como se veia con sus ojitos bien rasgado y bueno si se los agrando se nota mas su belleza

Won Bin se ve lindo de todas formas el es simplemente exquisito

bueno son detalles si ellos se sienten bien y aparteno cambian mucho , las operaciones d ela skoreanas si a veces son cambiaos muy grandes peor sigen siendo lindas y admirables igual son mis idolossssssssssssss

de hecho que se an operado, se nota la diferencia, y les contare que aki los japoneses tambien se operan, y sacan cada cosa para hacerse esa rayita en el parpado, por suerte que en mi familia todos tenemos esa rayita jajajajajaajaja, la verdad que esa rayita si da un toke tierno a la mirada. y agrandar los ojos tambien por eso es que se hacen esas operaciones. asu pero yo creia que los koreanos y las koreanas eran bonitas, ya veo que hay de todo en peru, japon, korea, china.

cuando yo vine a japon pense encontrar japoneses bajitos y gorditos como es lo clasico, pero no asu que por aki hay cada japones altaso y delgado y las japonesas esas son flacuchentas, la verdad a mi me daria verguenza salir asi de flaca a la calle. en fin eso si las colegialas tienen unas piernasas por andar de bici desde chikitas asu eso si es exageracion son flacas pero con unas piernasas.

Eso es, si por ahi lei que se habia hecho como 15 cirugias para tener ese rostro, yo What! solo para eso . hubiera esperado algo mejor.

talvez la palabra era otra, lo que quise decir, bueno es obvio q tiene cirugia en los ojos y en la nariz, pero aparte de eso las otras tantas cirugias que dicen yo me esperaba algo mas distinto, pero luce casi igual.

ahaa ok si no es mucha la direrencia como vuelvo a decir a Bae ni se le nota a Kwon si lo de los ojos peor igual me gusta su antes y depsues jeje
